Please don't forget to check this into the branch and trunk.
Only things that break the ABI, or have ABI questions, should not be
checked into the branch.
To make sure we're clear, there are no special rules for V3.
The only things that should be checked into the branch are fixes for
regressions, and other things that meet the criteria outlined for the
branch for other parts of the code.
