After fighting the hungry disk space daemon, dashing down the blind
alley of autoconfig version compatibility, reporting bugs and awaiting
fixes, and patiently awaiting the return of servers in far-off
timezones, I can finally post my interim results.
I have been able to build, install, and cursorily run various KDE 3.0
applications from the kdebase, kdesupport, kdeadmin, and kdeutils
packages (all of which are prediacted on the kdelibs and arts packages
as well as Qt 3.0).
The KDE testsuites are incomplete -- missing sources, datafiles, and so
forth, but of those that were present in the source tarballs I could
get, all tests passed. From cursory use testing, everything seems to
run as well as, um, the version 2.2.1 KDE applications I use every day.
I used KDE source snapshots from 2002.03.13 (3.0 rc3), which included a
fix to a showstopper bug I found. I rebuild GCC using a combined
source tree (gcc and binutils) updated yesterday (2002.03.26) as of
about 16:00 EST. My testing system uses libc 2.1.2 and Linux kernel
2.4.3 SMP on a dual 933 P-III host.
I will continue to build and check various KDE packages using GCC 3.1,
but I think we can conclude that the core of KDE 3.0 will build and run
okay with GCC 3.1.
Maybe I'll just tackle the games next.
