The problem arose on i686-pc-linux-gnu. (Debian 2.2)
The configuration was more or less as per the new install instructions:
gccsrcdir/configure --prefix=/home/russell/local --enable-shared
--enable-languages=c++ --enable-libstdcxx-v3
After that, I just did make bootstrap, followed by make install.
That all seemed to work as expected.
