Really, if this were fixed, c++ and java would both benefit enormously
(and stuff like gtk--, but that's a side bonus.) I think Brendan was
seeing reductions of 30-50% when he looked at this awhile back.
In a perefect world, autoconf/automake would automagically add these flags
to CXXFLAGS if it detected a gnu ld/as/cc1plus that could act correctly,
so that then everybody would transparently benefit.
