Er, thanks, I understand the dangers of inlining "in general" but we aren't
talking about general cases. We're discussing a particular situation, in
rather unique circumstances.
Ulrich pointed out that the functions would be visible at a higher level
than what I realized, and that the inlining would be done directly in client
code, not just at a library implementation level (my misunderstanding).
This would indeed impact compilation times of everybody. Mea culpa.
Does my second question still stand -- is it feasible to just benchmark the
two implementations on a couple of (more or less) representative machines?
That way we'll all have more numbers to throw into the discussion; it'll be
more fun. :-)
