Thanks for the hint, I was looking in the completely wrong place. I
tracked it down to this problem:

gcj --main=HelloWorld -o HelloWorld @source.txt # doesn't work
gcj --main=HelloWorld -oHelloWorld @source.txt  # works

I will add a bug report...
