We build embedded systems for oceanographic instrument platforms,
including moorings, drifters, autonomous underwater vehicles, remote
operated vehicles, etc. We are currently working on a "moored observatory 
network", consisting of multiple
instrumented nodes on the sea surface and deep seafloor, interconnected by 
fiber optics. Each instrument
node contains a StrongARM processor running embedded Linux. The node on the 
sea surface has a satellite modem
for communication with shore; user commands and instrument data flow through 
this moored network in realtime.
Each instrument on a node has a corresponding RMI service running on the 
node. More information about

The seafloor nodes are deployed with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The 
ROV does the hard dangerous work while we enjoy Dove Bars in the relative 
comfort of the mothership control room. ;-)
