Sorry that my build instructions were timed at a moment
where things aren't usable. Here's an update:

- This is looking like a problem in the gcc sources, not
binutils. I reverted to known good versions of
  binutils (2.13.90-20021006-2), mingw-runtime (2.4) and
w32api (2.3) and the problem still occurred.

- I'm now going to turn back time by modifying co34.sh
  in this bundle:

  http://www.thisiscool.com/mingw32-gcc-scripts.tar.gz

  to look like this:

  cvs -z 9 co -D 2003-06-29 gcc

I'll try diffing the sources to see if I see anything obvious
and then doing a build. I'll keep you posted.

Oh and the Cygwin build didn't work in the end. Probably
some missing packages I need to install. I'll try again, adding
flex and bison after I get the Linux build to work.
