Thanks for the reply.

The Runtime.exec() does work in XP,  the setting of the USERPROFILE 
environment variable doesn't appear to work in java at all in XP.  The 
same code works in 2000 but not in XP.  I'm investigating this further. 
  Sorry for the lack of testing before asking the question :)
