this is the problem! I'd never have thought of it. When I rename all the files 
with german umlauts and french aigus (don't know the english name of that 
stuff ;-)) it works perfectly well.

I'd be grateful if Mohan integrated the patch in his version - meanwhile I'm 
gonna play around with the 3.4er experimental :-)
