-d means "get new directories as well".  I recommend using it by
default.  Even better, use the contrib/gcc_update script to update.

I doubt it.  --disable-java-awt just means "don't build any peers".
It is the default.
Should have known, I was already told about that. Either by you or someone else on this list.
