I too will be happy to see this come to fruition!  In the mean time,
has anyone looked at the Toba project?

It looks like a promising, and possibly complementary project to the
cygnus java project.  I haven't got a decent non-gui java
application to try on it, but I'd be interested to hear of others
who might have used it.  It is close to GPL, as far as I can tell,
and proports to work on Linux.
