Mark: is this ok for the 4.0 branch? This patch fixes a recent regression in libgcj.

OK, but be careful. The Java front end is getting a second chance for 4.0 due to the fact that we need an RC2 -- but there may be no third chance if stuff gets broken badly at the last minute.
