I'm checking this in.

This updates our zlib to the latest release.  This release fixes some
bugs (not important to us, but perhaps important if someone is using
zlib from our tree), and improves performance.

The build system required a few tweaks for file name changes, but
that's all.

Are we trying to keep automake versions in sync in the tree now?
This directory requires 1.8, but I could easily bump that to 1.9
(which is what I actually used).
