Just to be clear, we CAN continue to merge from gui-branch after GCC enters stage 3. The stage 3 rules exist to permit the compiler proper to be stabilized and allow the compiler developers to focus on fixes. In libgcj, we have discretion over what changes are allowed provided they don't effect other parts of the compiler. Merging updates from gui branch is very unlikely to cause problems elsewhere in the compiler and runtime, so its fine to continue merging in the lead up to the 3.5 release (up until a few weeks before the release, at least).
