I've done something similar and it works fine.  I download the "raw"
message and put it in a file and fix all the "dot" and "at" stuff.  Not
all mailers support inserting arbitrary headers.  So where I differ from
your method is that I then have my mailer read this file as my mbox, e.g.
"pine -f ~/foo".  It'll contain this one message which you read and then
reply to.  All the mail thread stuff then "just works".
