I am quite curious as to how rpm got "in the middle of the game" here.
Please explain.

Pretty trivial after I noticed it. The spec I'm using was actually setting the host name itself explicitely.
However this doesn't affect the actual primary problem that versioning turns out to be disfunctional on my tiger install.
