Thanks. I should have looked at gcc-testresults.

But even using xlc

% xlc -qversion
@(#) IBM XL C/C++ Enterprise Edition V7.0
%

I still get the same error

: build/genattrtab /home/kate/gcc-4.0.0-20050410/src/gcc-4.0.0-20050410/gcc/config/rs6000/rs6000.md > tmp-attrtab.c
:
: out of memory allocating 80016 bytes after a total of 4161645756 bytes
: make[2]: *** [s-attrtab] Error 1

I have tested on two different powerpc-ibm-aix5.2.0.0
machines on different networks (although administered by
the same system administrator). The sys admin is usually
pretty good about keeping system patches up to date.

Any thoughts on what is different between our two machines?
Any suggestions for things to compare?
