Re: GCC 4.0 Status Report (2005-02-03)

Umm, each of us has the responsibility to make decisions that advance the overall state of the compiler... including the release manager, and the SC. He manages issues that have a temporal component, usually those that relates to a release time line. Certainly being aware of the incoming flow of projects and merges to mainline seems reasonable to me.

Decisions that don't have a time component, like, should we add Microsoft compatibility, are better left to maintainers and/or SC. When that sort of patch can and can't go in, is a RM issue, not really a SC issue. Now, Mark can certainly weigh in, as he is also a global writes person.

It is not your decision to make

Permitting the integration of a development branch into mainline late in the release cycle is RM issue, that was one of the major uses of the list last time as I understood it. What he can't do, is block it on RM grounds alone early in the release cycle. And of course the cutoff is, roughly speaking, his to make.

I don't think I've said anything that is controversial or disagreeable, if it is, hopefully its just due to sloppy wording on my part.
