hi all,
For your reading pleasure, see below. The following text has not been
uploaded to gccnews.chatta.us since it looks like its HD is full and the
webmaster has not answered my emails.
gcc release status
As usual, a small release status[0] from Mark Mitchel on gcc 3.4.3 and
gcc 4.0. The last few new features[1] are still being reviewed and are
likely to go in soon.
gcc development
It looks likes glibc CVS can be built again[2] with gcc CVS.
Giovanni Bajo has implemented an autopinger[3] which sends weekly
reminders of unreviewed patches stored in bugzilla[4] to the gcc-patches
mailing list.
I get scared when I read such threads[5] where no one[6] really agrees
on where exactly a bug comes from. Something is wrong but what the cause
of that wrongness is is always subject to debate[7]. Even Zdenek seems
to get lost[8].
The merge[9] of the gcjx[10] codebase into a cvs branch has started.
Scott Robert Ladd tried to start a discussion[11] on how to best
implement openMP[12] within gcc but few useful suggestions were brought
forward.
gcc users
In case you wonder, it is not possible[13] for a compiler to optimize
away code such as free (malloc (16);. Interestingly, this discussion
ended up talking about LLVM[14] and its memory allocation
optimizations[15].
In the real of bizarre things, I discovered[16] LEGO.NET[17], a gcc
frontend which parses MS IL and can thus be used to execute .NET code on
lego mindstorm toys[18].
