Yes, no one disagrees with that!

That's of course the issue, worth it to whom? And who covers the cost of this time. It's just a matter of balancing resources as usual.

It sounds like you have a regression test harness internally; would
it be practical to clean that up and contribute it?

I think the clean up would be more effort than rewriting by quite a large margin. The current script is tied into our whole system for bug tracking etc.
