I don't know. It's definitely broken. This is Austern's code;
this must have been overlooked when it was reviewed.

Matt, do you remember why you did this? Or, how soon do you think you
could fix it?
(I'm not sure I'll need to do this for what I'm presently working on,
but it would be nice to have it fixed...)
