My personal view is that SPARC is going to die rather sooner than later
(if you see what Sun is doing and how badly these processors have been
performing for the last 9 years I've been following them) and hppa is a
dead end. PowerPC, now that's something completely different!
I fully agree with you that we should strongly care about compile-time
performance -- and in fact I have been one of the strongest proponents
towards that end during the last couple of years.
However, I agree with Robert that there should be a minimum configuration
which we can assume, and if someone wants to use a VAX or a 80386 to run
GCC -- fine, but that cannot be our main focus.
