ColdFire happens to use a subset of the 68020(at least the V2/V3 cores
do), but with V4/V4e there are additions that are incompatible with
the 68020. Since V4/V4e adds limited superscalar, it is starting to
look less like a 68020, and more like a RISC machine. V5 goes further
by making it fully superscalar with two independant execution units.
To get the most out of the v5, the port needs to be rewritten to have
function units so GCC can schedule.
