I can only welcome this project.  I have a conversion to Autoconf 2.5x of libffi ready.

Should we move to Autoconf 1.7 at the same time?  I'd be for it, since there most
toplevel subdirs do not use it in strange ways (and one is libffi which I already
fixed).
