With -fdisable-simple, the file compiles fine, and I get :

current mainline is no problem.
For example :

But at the moment of the merger (2003/05/04) the mainline also had problems bootstrapping.
Although, '-fdisable-simple' seems to work fine, so I don't know if this is related.
