The problem is that if I do not draw the line, this process will go on
forever.  I am 100% confident that there are at least ten other
"trivial", good, useful patches for issues that someone will care about
lying around out there.  

That's sad -- but I've given plenty of warnings.  

In our current process, it's up to maintainers to review these things in
a timely fashion.

If this patch is reviewed -- and tested on at least three platforms that
use this Makefile target -- it can go in after the first prerelease.
