No, you are not required to purchase gcc, you can download it from our
website. However, you are free to buy it, if you wish. Should you?
Depends upon what your needs are. Only you can know this. If you can
loose $20,000/day for each day a bug remains unfixed in gcc, then you
will probably want to buy support for gcc. If you are happy to work
around any bugs that might be present, and don't face any financial
exposure, you won't need to buy support.
If in doubt, start off with the free package, and see if that is good
enough.
If you want me to guess at the right answer for your situation, I can
try. 1,000+ developers, yes, buy support. < 20, no don't buy support.
In between, toss a coin. :-)
