I've successfully built and installed GCC 3.1.1 in the following system:
i686-pc-linux-gnu
Output of gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.1.1/specs
Configured with: ../gcc-3.1.1/configure --enable-languages=c,c++
Thread model: single
gcc version 3.1.1
SuSE 7.2
Kernel 2.4.4-4GB as reported by uname -a
This is the standard kernel included with SuSE 7.2
glibc-2.2.2-38 (The version included with SuSE 7.2)
