If Stefan installs GCC 3.1 to compile his code, he should make sure not
to remove or overwrite the Red Hat GCC 2.96-RH compiler, since that is
the system compiler for Red Hat Linux 7.3 and the only compiler which
Red Hat will support.  GCC 3.1 is not binary compatible with GCC 2.96-RH
for C++ code, and since all the libraries written in C++ that came with
Red Hat Linux 7.3 were compiled using GCC 2.96-RH, replacing it with GCC
3.1 would lead to problems if he tried to compile any code that linked
against the existing binary libraries.

The safest thing, if he did this, would be to install GCC 3.1 in
/usr/local or some other non-system location, and make sure that he only 
uses it when he's not going to link against Red-Hat-provided C++ binary
libraries (e.g. the KDE or Qt libraries).

In any case, it sounds like he's found a bug in Red Hat's compiler, so
he should file the bug at bugzilla.redhat.com.  Red Hat is responsible
for any bugs in GCC 2.96-RH.
