-ax is no longer supported in 3.1.x compilers and it has been slowly
rotting over the years so I would not be surprised that it is broken in
version of comipler you use (you didn't metioned)
You may want to use the newer -fprofile-arcs (and -ftest-coverage)
that creates the files in same palce as .o files are stored and that
can be analyzed by gcov tool.
