Target mips64vr4100 (i386-hosted cross compiler)

Hello,

I read the cross-gcc FAQ as well as the gcc installation instructions
on the web site, and I'm trying to compile gcc 3.0.1 as an i386 linux
hosted cross compiler for an embedded system using a mips64 vr4120 CPU
(big-endian). The closest target I found is the mips64 vr4100, which I
believe should be compatible. I managed to compile and install
binutils 2.11.2 for the mips64vr4100 target. However, I can't seem to
configure gcc 3.0.1.

I use the following configure command:

../gcc-3.0.1/configure --prefix=/extra/cross --enable-languages=c --disable-nls --target=mips64vr4100

At the beginning of the configuration process, I get the message

*** This configuration is not supported in the following subdirectories:
     target-libffi target-boehm-gc target-zlib target-libjava target-libstdc++-v3 target-libf2c zlib fastjar target-libobjc
    (Any other directories should still work fine.)

This message leads me to believe that I should be able to get a
working C compiler for the target.

The configure process managed to configure 'libiberty', but when
configuring 'gcc' I get the following error:

Configuration mips64vr4100-unknown-elf not supported

So there seems to be some discrepancy here? What am I doing wrong?
