Some people are watching the repository for any sign of release tags or
ChangeLog or non-automatic version.c updates as well.

Will this be going to gcc-announce (in addition to anywhere else) so that
users who have subscribed to gcc-announce (and before that egcs-announce)
will hear of the release from there, not the press?

Where critical bugs are proven to show up in the actual release, can we do
patchlevel releases with the speed they had in RMS's day? (2.2.1 came out
one day after 2.2.)
