Sorry, I forgot to mention my g++ version:

gcc version 3.0 20010526 (prerelease)
and, yes, I noticed in the included text of the previous message the two
lines saying "at /usr/include/stdlib.h:245" and
"/usr/local/gcc/include/g++-v3/bits/std_cstring.h:104" --- but couldn't
understand why :-(

The instructions said to use Windows 98 or better - so I installed FreeBSD.
