It seems wholly unhelpful to me to characterize GCC as an "unmanaged
project". There are lots of people (including notably Mark) who are
indeed managing this project, and as far as I can see doing an
admirable job
Mark is "managing" the *release*. There is very specifically is no "manager"
(in any sense) of the entire development process and it was designed that way.
I use quotes because part of management in a commercial setting is the
ability to insist what the people they supervise work on. That cannot be
done with the GCC project and is what I meant by "unmanaged". Nobody, no
matter how well-intentioned or competant, has any power to dictate what
developers do. In a commercial managed project, it is the *role* of
management to decide what people work on and with what priority.
I'm not trying to fault individuals for "poor management", but to point out
that management *cannot* be applied to the GCC project (and if it could
somehow be done, most contributors would go away).
