    A test server would have tested, found the problem, and it would have
    taken me only minutes to correct the patch -- all without making poor
    Robert have to track it down.

A test server that knew to make this particular check, you mean.  Which is
different than the other types of breakages we've had (e.g., a non-GNU grep
being the one before that).  The number of ways that we can be creative
enough to break things far5 exceeds the number of things we can test for.
We're constantly in the situation of "fighting yesteray's wars", or if you
prefer a different metaphore "closing the barn down after the horse ran away".

In my opinion, what all these varied incidents have shown is that it's simply
*not* possible to do anything even close to the level of exhaustive testing
that would verify that all configurations still work, or even that a small
fraction of them do.

We have to accept the fact that things are going to break from time to
time and people will need to spend time tracking down the reasons and
fixing them.
