I think I'm happy to be on a system that does NOT use glibc then.
This behavior is offensive.

I don't want anything to  barf elsewhere than were it's supposed to barf.

Add an extra --systemprefix or whatever, but don't EVEN consider altering
any place outside of sysconfir and prefix without adding very explicit 
switches to do so.
