You will find the answer to your question in the documentation for GNU make.

Please don't ask any more questions of this sort on this list. The
purpose of this list is to support the development of GCC. It's not an
appropriate place for beginning programmer questions or for issues with
other tools, like "make". If we allowed it to turn into an open-ended
"answer anyone's questions" list, this would be unfair to the GCC
developers and testers, as this is their only forum.
