Some more information for non Ada folks, the API Robert mention is not
specific to GNAT, but is an implementation of the ASIS standard (ASIS
= Ada Semantic Interface Specification, ISO/IEC 15291:1999), which is
basically a large Ada API to access the compiler inner knowledge of
any compiled Ada program.
Other proprietary Ada compiler technologies are also providing this
API, and this allows anyone to write portable Ada source analysis
tools. Several companies are in this business.
For more information on ASIS, see for example:
<http://wwwold.dkuug.dk/JTC1/SC22/WG9/>
<http://www.acm.org/sigada/wg/asiswg/>
The AST standardization effort is already done for Ada and GNU Ada
implements it.
For GNU C and C++, it would indeed be better to have a GNU standard
than to risk having multiple proprietary things based on GCC, but I'm
not very aware of what's going on there ;-).
