The first thing that *should* be done (and should have been done months
ago, IMNSHO) is to link the GCC 3.0 release criteria page from GCC's
home page.  That would have foregone a lot of rather pointless debate
(i.e. like on Slashdot) about the "long overdue 3.0 release".

But I'm guilty here too, because I could have said this earlier ...
