That is pure luck. The compiler is not supposed to be operated in this
way; although I fully understand that this was not your question.

No, he meant exactly what he said. GCC never provides C libraries and
header files.

I won't argue about definitions here. If this is what it means for
you, then no, gcc is not "stand alone". Please note that gcc also
needs an operating system to run on :-)

I did, and I've also been using sockets.h from the system.
