i86 XFree & egcs

looking thru xf86 config, I've seen that
they use
-O2 -fno-strength-reduce

`to work around a bug in gcc2'.

I haven't found any other mention of that problem anywhere...
I was wondering if this still exists with, say, egcs-1.1.1.
I've looked thru XFree install notes, egcs FAQ, found nothing about it.

Maybe I missed something obvious ?...
This is a potential FAQ item, IMHO...
