egcs-1.1 under cygwin, why save inline template symbol names?

egcs-1.1 (egcs-2.91.57 19980901 (egcs-1.1 release)) built cleanly under
cygwin-B19, on an i586. I am working with c++ expression templates, and
my object files are getting clogged up with huge symbols for inline
functions, such as (nm -C output even though c++filt can't seem to
unmangle this):

This make the object files very big. These symbols do not show up under
linux or HPUX, as I belive they should not. Everything links fine, it
is just that my library is about 4x bigger than it should be because of
all these useless symbol names.
Anyone else experience this? Is it a known bug? Do Mumits
precompiled binaries also show this peculiarity?
