I had something like this happen under win95/cygwin32 running ash (but not
under winnt bash) where I can't install separate compilers in the standard
place and in /usr/local.
Installing in either place damages (but doesn't completely destroy) the other
installation. I'm going
to try a supposedly better version of ash.
