n64 mips assembler

I was refered to you by Jeff Law and I was hoping you could help me with
some work that I am doing. I am a research assistant at UC Berkeley's
computer science division and I am helping several graduate students and
professors to put together an n64 mips assembler with a modified
instruction set. In order to do this I would rather modify an existing
assembler rather than write one from scratch. The sgi assembler supports
n64 but their source code isn't available. The gnu binutils gas only
support o32 abi's. I was hoping that you would know of any information on
any work being done to add n64 support the the gnu binutils or if you have
any documentation on how to add new abi's so that I could do it myself
(the gnu documentation included with binutils don't seem to be very
helpful) Please get back to me if you find anything useful. Thanks.
