The native as on sysV68 cannot handle substractions of symbols (except in
switch tables), but why do we use substractions here ? Could exceptions not
work with absolute addresses ? sysV68 does not support shared libraries,
    it that matters.

Philippe,

I believe, your attempt to support the native system/environment where
possible is very honest; but, GNU `as' and `ld' on this particular
system are usable since one year (at least)! Since we are interested
in the evolution of `GNU Software', I don't think supporting these old
tools is worth the effort, don't you?

Make the GNU system live!
