The following code snippet executes on the intel differently than the alpha
  while (*tmptag)
    *(tmptag++)=toupper(*tmptag);
The alpha increments tmptag and then performs the assignment.

Here is the output of the included test case:
Intel:
tag is (Test String)
tag is (TEST STRING)
Alpha:
tag is (Test String)
tag is (EST STRING)

compile and run test.c on intel and alpha. Same code yeilds different results.
Compilation done with:
gcc test.c
in both cases.
