Wasn't the problem that plugins could call any function in GCC, or did that get scrapped? Thus -rdynamic.

Yes, -rdynamic is absolutely essential to plugins. The whole plugin "ideology" is that we don't commit ourselves to any stable API inside GCC, thus plugins may have to call any existing functions declared in any header file of GCC.
