Could someone review this patch?
It has been around a long time, the code changes seem reasonable
enough to me, and the corresponding PR has several dups (IOW, users
want it):

Now, maybe it is not a good idea, see Zack's note:

However, I think two additional considerations apply. First, even if
it doesn't work everywhere, it may work in some limited environments
and thus still be worth adding. Second, if we agree it is not a good
idea, the patch authors deserve a definitive "no".
