A while ago people were speaking of building stage1 optimized... can you
test with STAGE1_CFLAGS="-O2 -g"?

so not too much effect on the elapsed time (3 minutes).

On the Cell the effect should be more for optimized stage1 because of it handles loads after stores ( no load bypass).
